The lovely folk at Smokey Joe’s cafe have invited me back again for another night of great 50s rock’n’roll, rockabilly, and rhythm & blues on Saturday 16 January. As ever, I’ll be aiming to play whatever will get folk onto the dance floor, or treat their ears as they tuck into Smokey Joe’s tasty grub, but there’ll be a stack of jivers, boppers and strollers on hand to get your feet moving.
Directions and details can be found on the Smokey Joe’s Facebook page (click for the link), but basically I’ll be making a lot of rockin’ noise from 7.30 until late. What else is there to say….?
And what there is to say is that it was a great night! Following a very successful Swing Jive night the previous evening, I was afraid that numbers might be depleted, but was delighted that a good crowd of the more local swing jivers returned (egged on by their own organiser), to be joined by a gang of more hard core 50s fans from as far away as Bristol and the Forest of Dean. With the furniture rearranged to make a bigger dance floor, we saw lots of dancing, even a few boppers and strollers – in fact, it felt like a proper rockin’ club which is just what I’d always hoped it would be. Thanks go to Martin Reeves for putting the word around the Gloucester crowd – we must work closely to try to avoid overlaps!
